The Four Points by Sheraton Norwood donated a truckload of used towels and sheets to help in the clean-up effort of a mineral oil spill that occurred in the Muddy River on Saturday, June 21, 2008. The spill resulted in the accidental contamination of roughly 40 ducks and Canadian geese in an area that borders Brookline and West Roxbury, Massachusetts The linens were used to wipe the birds clean and to provide bedding for them as they underwent evaluation and feeding efforts under the supervision of Tri-State Bird Rescue out of Delaware.

Four Points by Sheraton Norwood responded to a request for towels and sheets from GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc., a long-time client of the hotel and an environmental services provider hired by NStar to assist with the cleanup, and delivered a truckload of linens to the Norwood office of GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. on Monday, June 23, 2008. The towels were then taken to the NStar-sponsored recovery location. Because of the hotel’s generous donation of linens bird rescuers had more than enough towels and sheets for the job, and therefore rescue volunteers did not need to seek linens from additional sources.
The underground pipe that leaked the mineral oil into the river is owned by NStar. The oil that spilled is a non-toxic light fluid that is used to cool underground electric cables and it is not as hazardous to water fowl as petroleum-based oil. However, the oil does coat their feathers, preventing the birds from regulating their own body temperature. It also disrupts their digestive system when they preen their feathers in an attempt to rid themselves of the oil.
