Hobbs Brook Management Recognized as a "Good Apple" By The Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation at their Annual ‘Educate Your Palate’ Event

WALTHAM, Mass. – April 19, 2011– The Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation (WEBF), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building excellence in education for Waltham public school students, announced that its 4th Annual “Educate Your Palate” fundraiser and other donations raised $25,000 for its grant program.  In gratitude for community support, the WEBF started a “Good Apple” award program to recognize those businesses that repeatedly include the WEBF in their charitable programs.

The Apple award stands for “Appreciation and Praise for Preparing our Learners for Education excellence”. They are intended to honor an exemplary educator, staff member or community leader who has made a difference in Waltham’s educational goals.

“We’re so fortunate to be able to implement a program that looks at education outside of the standard curriculum,” said Tom Dusel, president of the Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation and president and Chief Operating Officer of Hobbs Brook Management. “We are providing our community the opportunity to creatively enhance their own learning potential across the school system. It’s an amazing feeling to know how much hope and excitement this is generating throughout our schools.”

Hobbs Brook Management has been a steady supporter of the WEBF since its inception. In addition to regular donations of funds and resources, such as office and classroom furniture, Hobbs Brook is the WEBF’s $10,000 Forever Hawk sponsor. This year, Hobbs Brook is joined by Good Apple Award recipients from Boston Properties, Park Lodge Hotel Group, Watertown Savings Bank, Elephant Walk Restaurant and Glendale Package Store.

The “Educate your Palate” event enables the culinary arts students at Waltham High school to gain hands on experience with preparing and serving a catered meal, while serving as a backdrop for the photography department to showcase student work. This fundraiser, held at the Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham, benefits the WEBF Excellence in Education Program (EEGP), which is the cornerstone of the Foundation’s efforts to provide meaningful and enriching educational opportunities in the Waltham Public School System.

“We are incredibly grateful to the local businesses that make it a point of supporting education in Waltham,” said Deb Marcou, Vice President of the WEBF. “Without their continued generosity, we would not be able to implement the programs that continue to enrich our student’s learning.”

To date, the WEBF has funded over 14 new educational programs some of which include technology purchases such as handheld devices, computers, etc. enhancing student learning.

In addition to the EEGP, the WEBF is fortunate to be able to award an additional $5,000 grant for the next 5 years through the Sally Elizabeth Peters Enrichment Program. This program was made possible by a personal donation from Dr. & Mrs. Alan Peters in memory of their daughter Sally.

About the Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation
The foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides help to students and teachers of Waltham’s public schools. Formed in July of 2007, the foundation raises money to help develop programs not funded through tax dollars. Largely supported by sponsors, teachers apply directly for grant money to fund their initiatives. The program offers small grants up to $1000 for projects typically benefiting a single classroom, and major grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 to benefit a larger number of students.
