Hobbs Brook Management LLC and Columbia Construction Company Hold Topping Off Ceremony for New Corporate Campus in Waltham, Mass.

WALTHAM, Mass. –March 19, 2009 – Hobbs Brook Management LLC, a pioneer in the development of office space in the Boston suburbs, recently hosted a topping off ceremony for its new 335,000 s.f. corporate campus located at 175•185 Wyman Street, the latest addition to the Hobbs Brook Office Park in Waltham Mass. Columbia Construction Company of Andover, Massachusetts is the construction manager and Margulies Perruzzi Architects of Boston is the architect.

The entire 175•185 Wyman Street complex will be designed to meet green building standards. Hobbs Brook Management, along with Margulies Peruzzi Associates and Columbia Construction Company actively planned for, documented and applied for LEED® certification with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Gold certification is pending for 175 Wyman Street, while silver certification is pending for 185 Wyman St.

The original 335,000 s.f. building was demolished and 95% of the steel, concrete and masonry were recycled. The two new buildings will utilize an existing underground water storage tank to capture stormwater runoff for irrigation purposes. In addition, the project includes implementation of a green housekeeping program and construction of new roofs with a high reflection rating to reduce the heat island effect. Green practices extend to include preferred parking for hybrid vehicles and car poolers, as well as making shower facilities available to encourage the use of bicycles as transportation.

"Hobbs Brook is proud to observe this milestone by recognizing all the construction workers, along with Columbia Construction and Margulies Peruzzi Architects, for their efforts to make this project a reality for us,” said Donald Oldmixon, first vice president and manager of Real Estate Construction and LeasingforHobbs Brook Management LLC. “This building will be the ultimate in green office space when it is completed in the early part of 2010. Special care in planning for energy efficiency and the accommodation for green-lifestyle choices have been taken during the design phase in order to make sure this campus is a pioneer in office building sustainability.

The topping off ceremony for new building projects is an ancient construction tradition that marks the moment when the highest structural point in the building construction has been attained. To celebrate this event, a steel beam is painted white and signed by the workers and invited guests, then hoisted into place. A contemporary American version of this ceremony includes placing an evergreen tree on the beam along with an American flag to represent patriotism and respect for the construction workers.
